Minigame Competion #19
With me winning Minigame Competition #18 at MFGG with Luigi's Pipe Panic, I was able to select the theme this round. Ghosts and Their Environments is a theme that focuses on the various ghosts in and out of the Mario universe as well as the environments they haunt. I am hoping to use this is an opportunity to make a minigame focused on atmosphere as practice for my main project.
A couple different ideas have come to mind at the moment. For one idea, I thought it would be neat to play as Luigi in a point and click adventure style game within the mansion. With less engine development involved, I could spend as much time as I need working on the graphics as support for the atmosphere of a horror game.
The Gameboy Horror would have a radar for detecting ghosts, similar to the Boo radar, the closer the player's cursor gets to them. Without the flashlight or poltergust equipped, you'll want to avoid the ghosts as they will simply hurt Luigi. With them equipped, the flashlight will be on and provide light around your cursor (and startle a ghost, scaring it away temporarily), while a right click will begin sucking up the ghost from its hiding place. The goal will be to find the key to make it to the next room or find something to solve a puzzle. Coins found could be saved for Luigi's Labyrinth with a hidden ini file as well.
Another idea would be starring Chauncey in a minigame similar to the one in Luigi's Mansion with a couple twists. Chauncey hides in his room and will appear from objects that are shaking. Using the poltergust, Luigi catches the balls Chauncey throws at him and shoots them at Chauncey when he appears. After each hit, Chauncey disappears and throws objects at Luigi faster until he's had enough and offers Luigi a key. If I go with this idea, I'd like the key to be saved to a file compatible with Luigi's Labyrinth to be used to unlock a bonus room of some kind.
Not sure which idea I'm going with yet, I'd really like to try the point and click adventure style of gameplay at some point, though!
